Resumen del concurso

Design a "Smart” Robotic Arm (SRA)

In this contest, you are asked to design a Smart Robotic Arm (SRA) that will be mounted to Astrobee and can attach to an ISS Handrail after being stowed in a Payload Bay.

How it works:
Initially, the SRA will be packed in a stowed configuration. When it is powered and commanded by the Astrobee, the SRA must be able to autonomously perform four high-level actions:
1) unpacking from the stowed configuration and attaching to a Handrail,
2) moving the Astrobee side to side, “panning”,
3) moving the Astrobee up and down, “tilting” and
4) detaching from the Handrail and (re-)stowing in Astrobee’s payload bay

Click on the links below to see detailed design instructions, constraints and solution templates for this problem.

Challenge rules:
The prize will be awarded for the lowest mass, technically feasible solution, submitted by the contest deadline.
No working prototype is required for submission, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design (i.e., comply with all requirements) and the credibility of your mass estimate.
Only complete submission packages will be evaluated.

“Ainal A. developed an innovative design for a smart robotic arm for a NASA free-floating robot (Astrobee). This was a NASA contest and this design was selected from 48 entries as the most feasible and least mass design. Ainal A. provided a thorough design submission and a very innovative design. ”

Please join us in congratulating Ainal A. as the winner for this challenge. Thanks to all of the participants for all of your hard work on this challenge. Sorry for the delay in announcing the winner. The judging panel was very impressed with the submitted designs and the evaluation was quite difficult.

Unfortunately I didn't make the deadline. Ran into some bad luck like starting late, unable to work on the project 40+ hours a week, laid up for a few days with Bronchitis, preparing with and dealing with Michael that tracked right over our heads, having to take my wife to the emergency room on the last day of the contest. But that's OK, even with a short extension my entry would not have been the best, probably incomplete, and too heavy. Too much of a burden for the launch vehicle. I spent many many hours working on the project and finished approximately 98% of the total entry package. Anyway,, thanks for the opportunity and I will be looking for more of this type of NASA contest packages in the future. Luck and Success.

This contest is now closed. Thank you for all of your hard work on some really amazing designs. Our team will be evaluating the submissions and announce the winners as soon as we can (likely 1-2 weeks). There are 2 other contests that will be launching this week and several more launching over the next month. We look forward to seeing more of your amazing talents! Thanks!

I`m not gonna make the deadline unfortunately, I had the right idea just a couple of days ago after trying different design, I`m almost done with the CAD models but I can`t finish the documentation properly so I decided to drop out instead of presenting an incomplete documentation.

Unlike some of the previous contests, this one does not specify any details about the cables to be used. Should we still stick to the specifications as in the previous contests? OR are we free to select the cables as part of our design? for example can I use flex cables if I want to?

I just observed something and made me confused. Is the coordinates of the center of rotation based on a fixed point on the handrail regardless of coordinates where the attaching tool is attached. Or is the coordinates of the center of rotation based on where the attaching tool is attached like that of the SFA.

In response to "Also NASA, to be able to optimize the design, may I assume that the feature wherein during panning and tilting, the SRA will make the Astrobee Keep Out Zone move away from the Handrail and Wall when there is a possibility of collision. Similar to EMA, SFA and SCA." The SRA is responsible for moving the Astrobee and Astrobee Keep Out Zone away from the ISS Handrail to minimize collision during panning and tilting.

Hi, just a question regarding item 4.1.1. Currently, my design will never touch the “keep out zone” (as described in C1.1, Figure 6). When stowed, it fits nicely inside the “AstroBee payload bay” (according to C1.2, Figure 7). But there are some differences between those two figures, my main concern being the 25x25 mm. cutout in Figure 7 that doesn’t exist in Figure 6. Is this correct? Or should I consider the keep out zone (Fig. 6) as a “negative” of the payload bay described in Figure 7 – this is, including the cutout as a part of the keep out zone? Thanks.

The Astrobee Payload volume (the box with the cutout in Figure 7) doesnt show up in Figure 6, but you can see where it fits and how it is alligned. The 25mm x 25mm cutout in Figure 7 isnt part of the Astrobee Keep Out Zone and you may put design elements into that cutout space when the SRA is not stowed. However, when the SRA is stowed, it must fit entirely into the shape seen in Figure 7.

Hi! just a couple of questions regarding R9

R9.1 The SRA shall be able to pan 90 degrees in 15 seconds.
R9.2 The SRA shall be able to tilt 90 degrees in 15 seconds.
R9.3 Combined pan and tilt operations shall not exceed 1 hour.

First: According to R2.3, Panning range is within +/-65º, why R9.1 states that SRA shall pan 90º?

Second: Probably I´m wrong but there seems to be a discrepancy in R9.1 and R9.2. Attach and stow are allowed to last 15 minutes each, pan AND tilt combination may take 1 hour, but tilt OR pan each shall last no more than 15 seconds, shouldn´t be 15 minutes too? I mean... pan an tilt shall no last longer than 15 seconds each, but combined are allowed to last up to 1 hour. Is this correct?

    Thanks

First: This is to give you an idea of how quickly your system must move. Second: The entire operation of this arm can last up to one hour, 30 minutes. 15 minutes for attach, one hour for operations (which includes panning and tilting commands or being on standby) and 15 minutes for stow.

Thanks. I understand better... but sorry I still want to confirm something:

Let´s say that the arm is correctly attached to the handrail and positioned at 0º, so it is ready to execute pan/tilt commands. If the arm is commanded to pan 90º then it shall reach that position in just 15 seconds, right?

Hi, is it possible to post the same design in more than one challenge? this is quite similar to the other robotic arm challenges. Is it possible to use pneumatic to drive the arm? Thanks

You may use the same design. You may want to examine the requirements for each challenge carefully as a single design may not be able to meet the the requirements of multiple contests. Yes, pneumatic may be used (while the design is for space, it is within a pressurized volume, not vacuum).
