Resumen del concurso

Art & Politics: In very early times, some of the Japanese and some of the Korean peoples were close kin. Over the millennia, interactions have varied widely. During the 20th century, the Korean peninsula saw colonialism and warfare, and was divided into North and South. Japanese imperialism caused many Koreans to immigrate either freely or forcibly to Japan into the mid-20C, creating a resident Korean population in Japan called Zainichi. Economics, politics, and cultural shifts during past few decades have continued the close co-dependency between South Korea and Japan, while North Korea is increasingly a threat. 600-800 words
Recent relations have become increasingly fraught between both North and South Korea and Japan. For some, history has become a weapon. There is a hot spot around the so-called “comfort woman” (or forced military prostitute) issue and the commemorative statues that have been put up around the world.
This issue was at the fulcrum of the Aichi Triennale 2019 held in Nagoya city during the summer, designed to protest increasing artistic censorship in Japan. The exhibition was shut down after just three days (although it was later reopened for a week in October).
Summarize your understanding of this issue as it relates to the history of Korean-Japanese relations and express your opinion about this potent mixture of politics and art. Draw from our class discussion on Dec 5 and at least the four below sources. (If you use other sources, please cite them at the end).
* • For the context of Zainichi and Korean-Japanese relations: Min Jin Lee’s book, Pachinko (that has been assigned to you)
* • For the censored art exhibition: https://apjjf.org/2019/20/McNeill.html
* • For the history of the “comfort women”: https://www.history.com/news/comfort-women-japan-military-brothels-korea
