Draw a line down a sheet of paper to create two columns.
In one column, write down everything you remember being said in a recent conversation between you and someone close to you. These are content messages.
In the other column, write down what was implied but not said outright. These messages may be underlying meaning, hints, and reflections about how each person feels about the conversation and each other. As best you can, capture the relational meaning as you perceived it and what your conversational partner perceived at each stage of the conversation.

What significant relational messages were conveyed in the conversation?
Do you think you interpreted the relationship messages mostly the same or mostly different from your conversational partner.
