From a humble begining to becoming a multi- billionaire in Nigeria. Folorunso Alakija who was born in 1951 to the family of Chief L. A. Ogbara in Ikorodu, Lagos, She started her career as an executive secretary at Sijuade Enterprises in Lagos, way back in 1974. In the early 80s, Alakija quit her job and went on to study Fashion design in England. On her arrival back to Nigeria, She ventured into her own tailoring company, Supreme Stitches, a premium Nigerian fashion label, selling high-end Nigerian clothing to fashionable wives of military bigwigs and society women.
With her determination to excel, her fashion house rose to prominence and fame and by the 80’s she was rated as the fashion designer of the year. In May 1993, Folorunsho applied for the allocation of an oil prospecting license (OPL). The license to explore for oil on a 617,000-acre block—now referred to as OPL 216—was granted to Alakija's company, Famfa Limited.
As of 2015, Alakija is ranked by Forbes as the richest woman in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $2.1 billion.
Folorunsho Alakija is married to Modupe Alakija, who is a lawyer. The couple has been married for over 39 years and are blessed with four sons and grandchildren.
