ASSESSMENT TITLE: Identify the key processes that are necessary when reprocessing a reusable surgically invasive medical device through a Central Decontamination Unit (CDU). For each of the key steps identify any relevant harmonised European Standards that may be used to control each process. There is also inconsistency in how references have been cited, particularly with regard to the citation of BS, EN and ISO standards, where the Harvard system of referencing has not been consistently applied. Whilst reference was made to the decontamination life cycle and some standards were referenced there was poor linkage of the standards with the key processes in the lifecycle and no consideration of sterilization processes other than moist heat sterilization or standards that may be associated with manual washing and disinfection processes. The assessment also required that the student identified which Essential Requirements within Directive 93/42/EEC Annex I were relevant for each identified process and explain how use of these harmonised standards could be used to demonstrate compliance with the requirements within the Directive. This was poorly done, for example the first process identified from the life-cycle was acquisition and, although reference was made to EN ISO 13485, there was no reference to how EN ISO 13485 could be used to establish suitable purchasing controls to address relevant QMS requirements for purchasing within Annex V. There was also no discussion of the differences between Article 11 and Article 12 in terms of regulatory compliance within a CDU in the UK. It should be noted reference was made to the management of healthcare within the UK although the management of healthcare is devolved within the UK with, for example, Health Boards in Wales rather than Trusts.
