I am looking for some help designing/developing a pinewood derby car powered by motors. The electronics need to fit within the standard pinewood derby car dimensions and accommodate a designed shell to cover the electronics. A few notes to consider: - Here is a link to the track that will be used. [login to view URL] - The track features a starting gate that uses dowels that fall under the track releasing the cars. I pressure switch can be used to start the wheels. [login to view URL] - The curve of the track does require us to maintain our wheels on each end of the car at the proper height from the track. [login to view URL] - The stopping section drops the cars on their bellies with the wheels no longer touching the track. It has rubber on it to increase friction and stopping power. We could also use this to stop the wheels by having a pressure switch on the bottom that turns off the wheels. [login to view URL] - The car specs need to fit within these requirements. [login to view URL] - Use the car specs as a reference for dimensions as I do not want to use the standard car wheels. These are plastic and will not provide enough traction. - While length and width are hard dimensions we are not able to move, the height is somewhat adjustable. I would like to stay within the 3” requirement. However, we do have a full 6” to play with. This is the timer at the end of the track that we must pass through. [login to view URL] - Using a rubber or silicon wheel will grab the guide rails and cause the car to go off the track. We will need to use spacers or washers to protect the wheels from the guardrails. Wheels such as these would need a rail guard. [login to view URL] A few design thoughts and requirements: - I would like to incorporate LEDs that possibly simulate car lights. For example, head and tail lights or even lights that illuminate under the car or the wheels. This will be in a well-lit area which would require bright LEDs. - Any parts that can not be sourced should be in STL format to allow for 3D printing or easily fabricated using basic materials/tools. - The platform should be an STL file for 3D printing or able to be cut out of pine. STL file is preferred. - The shell would need to be designed. It should fasten to the platform securely with easy removal to get access to the components, have a decent design that resembles a car and be an STL file for 3D printing. - Easy charging of the car would also be needed. Being able to plug in the car and charge instead of removing the battery would be a nice touch. - This car needs to be fast. I will see a fan car similar to this one - [login to view URL] I will also most lily see a Co2 powers car similar to this one - [login to view URL] If possible, I would like to leverage Silicon Labs components as Silicon Labs is my employer. What I am looking for: - STL of the platform - STL file of any additional parts required - STL file of shell - STL file of the platform with components to help with possible Shell modifications. - Part/Components list with links to sources - Diagrams of how to hook everything up - Diagrams of how to mount everything - Code required - Any support, documentation, and resources to help as this is my first project like this. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please also include an estimate along with a timeframe for the projects. -AF PS. I have built versions of this car in the past. - The first was a four-motor car that leveraged belts on the wheels. This car performed great, only being beat by the fan car referenced above. (which is my car as well) - The second was intended to be the next generation but was never finished.
