The worktable in an NC positioning system is driven by a rack-and-pinion with a pinion pitch radius 5mm, assuming the circular pitch and linear pitch are matched perfectly. The pinion is powered by a stepping motor which has 240 step angles. The shaft of the motor is connected directly to the pinion. The worktable is programmed to move 150 mm from its present position at a travel speed of 200 mm/min. a) How many pulses are required to move the table the specified distance? b) What is the required motor speed? c) Pulse rate to achieve the desired table speed?

5mm pitch radius >> 5*2*pi =10pi circumference 10pi/240 = pi/24 single step length 150/(pi/24) = 150*24/pi >> ~1145 steps

I can give you an direct answer to your question within minutes of receiving the ok for this question as the question is simple mathematics. However using this information directly is not advisable as without knowing the motor torque, mechanical torque induced by the worktable through the rack and pinion one does not know what kind of acceleration and deceleration would be advisable so that the stepping motor does not slip. Better yet do you have a secondary measurement system that can be compared to the expected motor travel. This could help diagnose wear problems before they cause issues in your end product.
