Quick and easy project.

Most of the work is already done, I just need the matlab code that will generate a plot in the format of Figure 1, given the data I have collected.

Figure 2 is a better representative of how it should look.

(the red horizontal line on the left and blue line on the right are the theory lines)

(the red vertical lines are the errorbars)

I will send more instructions and files to those interested

Here is the objective of the project:

OBJECTIVE

Deciding on the value of a signal parameter in a noise background is the topic of this

experiment. A human observer will be used in the decision process, with visual clues.

The detection of acoustic signal parameters from a visual display is a standard method

in seismology, as well as bioacoustic studies.

BACKGROUND

The probability of detection of a signal against the background of noise will be investigated

in this experiment. The most basic binary decision is wether a signal is present or

absent. This is the first level of information that emerges as the signal-to-noise ratio rises

to the detection threshold. Implicit in this decision is an estimate of arrival time. For

simple tonal pulses, if the pulse is correctly detected, the arrival time will be known to

within a pulse length. However, if the event were a false alarm, the arrival time associated

with that decision bears no relationship to that of a signal. It is sensible to speak

about the error in arrival time only under the condition that the signal is present. Thus,

the question of the accuracy with which one can estimate a parameter of a signal usually

deals with high signal-to-noise ratios and with high apriori probabilities that the signal

is present. By placing proper constraints on the question, it is possible to investigate

the behavior of errors associated with the estimation of arrival time over a continuous

range of signal-to-noise ratios, from below the detection threshold up to the limiting case

of very high signal-to-noise.
