We are looking to revamp/replace our entire image upload and serve function for our shopping cart, which is a heavily modified version of oscommerce.
We want an upload function similar to facebook. We want to be able to upload multiple images to a product, without having to upload each one manually. We need to be able to rearrange them and sort them as needed, we want to be able to set which image will be the main image.
Thumbnail images need to be re-sized automatically and saved on the server to be served as needed.
All large images served on the front end, should have a watermark. The thumbnails don't need watermarks, but the zoomed in large version does.
Original source Images and resized images should be saved in a folder structure similar to WordPress's implementation. There should be a folder for the year, with sub folders for each month. So for example /i/2012/12
We also want to be able to go back to the product and delete images that are wrong, re-sort them, and upload new ones.
When images are deleted, their resized versions should also be deleted.
Right now our site has some of the functionality explained above. We use ImageMagick to resize and create thumbnails. Currently, we FTP images to a folder on the server /i/. Each image has a file name that is the same as the SKU number of the product. So the software knows to automatically associate these files with the product.
Problems that we are currently have are as follows:
1. All images and cached resized thumbnails are store in one folder @ /i/. This is a huge problem, because there are over 100k files in this folder making it difficult to browse, open, download, etc.
2. ImageMagick creates multiple redundant cached images of the same image which adds to the problem in item 1 and takes up more space.
3. Maintaining images, deleting, uploading, re-sorting is difficult, because it all has to be done via FTP, which only 1 person has access to.
Whatever the solution that you decide, I would prefer an HTML5 or Ajax solution for the upload function. I do not want to use flash.
Here is an example of a multiple file upload script that we could use in the admin.
