JOB DESCRIPTION:
Are you a Senior MySQL Database Engineer with development experience who wants to work remotely/telecommute for 3-6 months? This is an ideal job for the right candidate interested in utilizing his/her expertise with MySQL database development in a critical, fast-paced, and deadline-driven project.
We are a two-year startup that is looking to establish a working relationship with a Sr. MySQL DBA for the development of a new, flagship web application for our clients. This project will be managed in development phases, with the initial phase being a fast-tracked pre-alpha release (1 month timeline). Successful completion of the first phase of the project could lead to additional phases (alpha and beta), projects, and a long-term working relationship.
Applicant must be a self-starter, motivated, and efficient. Possess creative ability, credibility, self-confidence and independence. The Sr. DBA will be a member of a development team located throughout several time zones, so must be a good team player with strong analytical, communication, and troubleshooting skills. All team members, including the DBA, will be required to document and update the progress of their work in the company's project management tool.
The Sr. MySQL DBA will be responsible for the initial administration of 6 MySQL v5.1 development databases with 78 million rows, 250 tables and views, and 5gigs of data running on RHES/CentOS v5.6. This role could expand to the administration of databases in the much larger test and build/production environments. As such, this role will develop and implement MySQL database standards and infrastructure and will perform installations, configuration, monitoring, backups, loads, tuning, upgrading, and schema alterations, and contribute to disaster recovery design, warehousing initiatives and tool selection.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Schema design and optimization; manually create relational and reciprocal tables from scratch; set PKs, FKs, indexes, etc. Sanitize data and import processes. Work to build a structure that meets the business needs in general.
- Responsible for ensuring that the database is fully optimized for mission critical object-oriented PHP applications, and vice versa. Manage the activity of all the application components that interact with the database and carry out activities such as application installation and patching, application upgrades, database cloning, building and running data cleanup routines, data load process management, etc.
- Ensures technical documentation is kept up to date (run logs, process diagrams, system information, technical documents, etc.). Formal change management and incident management processes (ITIL)
- Demonstrates a sound understanding of the company's functional / business objectives that drive and shape technology requirements and design deliverables
- Liaise with other development and infrastructure team members to resolve complex application performance analysis. Mentoring software engineers in developing applications that interact with MySQL
- Quickly diagnose database and server problems. Employ preventive measures to maintain server availability and security
- Responsible for implementing a formal backup and recovery policies and procedures.
- Defines best practices and technology roadmaps. Ability to articulate end-to-end technical requirements across delivery functions
CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience with mission critical MySQL RDBMS
- Minimum 3 years of MySQL development experience.
- Experience implementing a MySQL HA and Redundant solution with MySQL DRBD (preferred).
- Experience with MySQL Cluster and/or MySQL Replication
- MySQL sharding, partitioning, horizontal scaling
- Experience in InnoDB Mode; converting MyISAM to InnoDB for advanced functionality.
- Monitoring MySQL databases using Nagios, Cacti or any other open source tools.
- Shell scripting to automate database administration functions.
- Progressive experience as DBA on Linux server operating system.
- Object-oriented PHP.
- PDO abstraction layers.

- DBA in cloud environment (AmazonWS)
- MySQL Certified
- Demonstrated experience with Open Source/Linux development and production environment
