There are many way which could we use to integrate your magento site, create a custom module, or configure existing module .. Both options is Good, but, for better optimization, i prefer to using existing module and configure, or tweaking them .. We could just add or replace some field in registration form ( in order to keep registration function is safe ) or add piece of piece of code that allow mailchimp get user information from registration process .. I can do this within few hours ( including testing and debugging ) I could integrate your magento site with mailchimp properly, activate double optin to ensure your list always clean and clear .. I'll also analyze to remove some unecessary scripts that gotten from mailcimp form ( sometime ) to reduce the script load ..
