I propose a Genetic programming approach in order to come up with the most optimized ML algorithm for your task, specially for hyperparameter optimization. as for the GPU, no need to worry as I train all of my models on google cloud engine which has 8 x Tesla K80 graphic card. At the end of the day, it all depends on the dataset you have, even the most advanced and complicated ML algorithms would perform poorly on a not carefully selected data. Recently we have used data augmentation to increase the performance of CNN on images. Appropriate preprocessing also can improve the result. Transfer learning is another technique to improve the result. In a transfer learning method first a CNN is trained on other datasets which are similar to your data, then the obtained knowledge is transferred to a new network to train your data.
