MediaWiki Help! Installing Templates From Wikipedia etc.

I am in the process of exporting articles from Wikipedia to my own wiki which is a city based wiki. It is running on the MediaWiki platform (obviously). Exporting and importing the pages is no problem and everything has worked out well. However the majority of wiki pages call on templates within MediaWiki. When I export the actual templates from Wikipedia and import them into my own wiki the templates almost ALWAYS look odd and show characters within articles where there should not be. I am apparently doing something wrong within the translation from wiki to wiki and need assistance.

I am looking for someone who has prior experience working within wikis and the MediaWiki platform. I dont need you to transfer over the templates, I can do that myself. I need help installing them correctly so they look right when they are displayed on my page.

Additionally I also need a couple other fixes within my wiki. One example is changing the CSS within the wiki so that the 'new' article links do not show up the default color of red, but rather another color. I have edited a number of CSS files within MediaWiki but regardless of all other formats that correctly show the color I give them, the 'new' article link always stays red.
