I start testing and developing WordPress performance in 2008. I think WP is overused in a bad way. Its a blog engine and no other!!! Serving static content with this engine (or other cms like Drupal, Joomla) is a mistake. The best practice: use static file based frontend for website and (if you really need a blog) install a blog engine (WP with lightweight theme, or Nibbleblog) into a subdirectory. Without good CDN, WP will always slower.
