Configure nginx to work as SSL reverse proxy for Apache Zeppelin

I need to have nginx to work as a reverse proxy for Apache Zeppelin so that Zeppelin can be seen at [url removed, login to view]
The Zeppelin will be running at default port http://localhost:8080/
There will also be other services running behind the same nginx, each identified with the first component in the external server URL.
This task will be most likely require some configuration changes to Zeppelin in addition to Nginx. I would hope that no code changes to Zeppelin are required, but that might also be possible. Zeppelin uses apparently also web sockets.
I'm also posting similar tasks for Grafana, Node Red and IPython notebooks.
Deliverables should be a working example of nginx and Zeppelin config files.
Note: To filter out knowledgeable offers from noise, please explain in a few words why it usually is not enough just to proxy https://server/path to http://localhost/.
