Two high-speed, high-capacity (20 Gbps–40 GHz) data-carrying signals are transmitted simultaneously over free space over the characteristic HG modes, HG00 and HG01. Through the use of a continuous wave (CW) laser and a multimode generator, the unique spatial optical modes are created (MMG). Using a 4-QAM generator, a 20 Gbps data-carrying laser beam is created for each channel. An optical OFDM modulator is now used to modulate the signal, using 1024 inverse fast fourier transform (IFFT) points spread across 512 sub-carriers. A quadrature modulator (QM) is used for further modulation. The modulated signal and a 40 GHz RF pulse are combined after passing through the mixer. In a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), the signal is optically modulated after which it is broadcast across several HG modes into the FSO channel. The signal is initially amplified using a semiconductor optical amplifier when it reaches the receiver (SOA). To separate dissimilar modes, a mode filter based on the non-interferometric modal decomposition concept is employed. After that, a PIN Photodiode converts optical signals into electrical signals. To retrieve the original data stream, this signal is demodulated using an OFDM and QM demodulator.
