A landscape photographer.

WHAT IS THE BRIEF: We require a selection of landscape photography to be taken of the Glencorse Wood near Yrpes, which will be used in a WWI museum exhibition in Melbourne, Australia. Background: August 2014 marks one hundred years since the outbreak of World War I - a highly significant watershed in Australian history. Melbourne, as temporary national capital, was the centre of Australian war-time operations, and thousands of Victorians lost their lives or were damaged forever by the conflict. The major element of Museum Victoria’s commemoration will be a 210m. exhibition presented in the Mind and Body Temporary gallery space at Melbourne Museum. It will run for two years from August 2014. The exhibition will explore the four years of conflict and beyond, presenting the war as a 100-year story to which Victorians today are still connected. It will focus on the impact and aftermath of war for Victorians – particularly the damage to the soldier’s mind and body, and the broader effects upon the community from the conflict. It will draw on Museum Victoria’s own rich object, photograph and document collections, and will include significant digitisation of these resources, creating a long-term legacy for all Victorians. Glencorse Wood Glencorse Wood was a WWI battleground near Ypres, Belgium, in which over two thousand Australian soldiers were killed. The battle has particular significance within this exhibition as the site where two of our thread characters died; their remains still lay buried somewhere within the Glencorse Wood. The Wood is located just a little to the southwest of Polygon Wood, below the A19 motorway, and can be reached by following the small road called Wulverstraat which runs to the south of Polygon Wood back towards Ypres. Glencorse Wood was the name given to the southern part of the wood that once surrounded the Benedictine Abbey which used to stand near here. The other part of these woods was known as Nonnebossen. WHY The landscape photography of the wood will be used as part of an interactive exhibition where current day photo's of the wood are contrasted with historical photo's of the same wood during different stages of WWI. The photography will be projected large scale, to create a sense of being 1-1 with the environment. The Glencorse Wood exhibit is intended to provide an emotive, powerful experience, evoking a World War I battlefield at large scale. The changes of the battlefield, from green forest, to partial devastation then full devastation, then back to green forest, are intended to make a strong, lasting statement about the violence and futility of war. It is expected that the photography will capture different stages of light within the wood, in order to enhance depth within the images (e.g. early morning, dawn). The purpose of re-shooting the wood in May is to capture the flourishing greenery, that will draw a very distinct contrast from the pre and during battle imagery. WHERE The Museum undertook a preliminary photo shoot at Glencorse Wood in December 2013, during winter. The images along with the GPS coordinates will be supplied to the contractor to assist with the re-shoot in spring. See diagram 8-9.
