Economics Scrapbooks:\r\n? Collect and analyze five (5) articles from newspapers, magazines, computer on-line\r\nservices, or WWW sites related to microeconomic topics covered in this course. In\r\naddition to news articles, cartoons and certain advertisements are also eligible. As\r\nvariety with respect to course topics is important, no more than three articles\r\nshould be related to the topics of demand, supply, price and output\r\ndetermination per se. Demand/supply applications, such as price ceilings, price\r\nfloors, taxes, and subsidies are not considered to be demand-supply topics, per se.\r\n\r\n? For each article: (1) In the heading of the write up, indicate the title of the\r\narticle, source, date, and microeconomic topic to which the article\r\ncorresponds. (2) ANALYZE the article using the microeconomic theories and\r\nconcepts developed in this course. In other words, use a theory or concept to\r\nexplain the event. Do not merely summarize the article. The articles are to be\r\nincluded in the scrapbook so only a brief summary is needed. One suggestion for\r\nanalysis, where appropriate, is to consider the effect of the event on business. If an\r\narticle is just an example of something it may be more difficult to do an analysis. (3)\r\nGraphs should be included where appropriate.\r\n\r\n? The following guidelines apply: (1) A copy of each article is to be included and\r\nprecede its analysis. Photocopies are O.K. For articles obtained electronically via\r\nthe Internet, provide a print copy. (2) The articles must have appeared in print\r\nduring the current semester, preferably at different times. (3) Analyses must be\r\ntyped single spaced or, preferably, word processed, using a word processing\r\nprogram, such as Word. (4) The analysis of each item is limited to a maximum of\r\ntwo pages, not including relevant graphs. (5) Scrapbook should include a cover\r\npage containing the name of the author; the date submitted; the course title, number,\r\nsection, and meeting time; the name of the instructor; and perhaps an interesting\r\ngraphic. (6) Scrapbook should include a table of contents. (7) The material\r\nshould NOT BE SUBMITTED IN A LOOSE FASHION. All papers should be\r\nattached with something other than a paper clip, binder clip, or those plastic things\r\nthat slide along the edges of the papers and do not stay on very well. Small binders\r\nor folders with three clips for inserting 3 hole punched paper work well.\r\n? Using a 0 -5 grading scale, scrapbooks are graded on the basis of the following\r\ncriteria: (1) Quality of the analysis of each article; (2) Originality and creativity; (3)\r\nAppropriateness of the articles selected; (4) Appropriate use of graphs where\r\nrelevant; (5) Diversity of topics selected; (6) Diversity with respect to date of\r\narticles; (7) Level of analysis required; (8) Adherence to guidelines; and (9) Overall\r\npresentation of materials.\r\n
