Circa 1996 a mixed group of South African students came to visit Makerere University in Uganda (the premier university in the country). What struck me was how astonished that mixed group of South African students ("Black, White, Colored and Indian") were to see us Ugandans casually and freely mingling and collaborating with people from all across the globe. Seeing the horror that was apartheid from a distance (on TV etc.) is one thing but seeing it up close even in its most subtle of forms leaves a profound effect.
