The overall task is to make a plug-in for Microsoft Office that will allow users of Microsoft office to read, write, and preview files in OpenDocument format (ODT).
For information on Open Document format, see [login to view URL]
Please bid to develop a plug-in for reading and writing OpenDocument files from Microsoft Word only. We will work on PowerPoint and Excel files, and the preview feature, in a later release.
ARCHITECTURE
Open Office 2.0 has the ability to read and write both Microsoft .DOC files and OpenDocument files. We will take the MINIMUM set of components from Open Office that will allow us to read and write .DOC and OpenDocument files. We will package this as an executable filter program. Then we will write Microsoft Office plug-in scripts to run this filter. It is acceptable to save the file as a temporary .DOC file, and then run the filter on the file.
SKILLS REQUIRED
The developer must be an expert in C programming and build script design, for working with Open Office and building the file converter.
The developer should have experience with Microsoft office scripting and plug-in installation, which is required for making the plug-in and the installer.
LICENCING
The source and executable code will be released under the GPL open source license. Copyrights to any new code will be held by Assembla, Inc.
## Deliverables
BID DELIVERABLES Please bid to develop a plug-in for reading and writing OpenDocument files from Microsoft Word only. We will work on PowerPoint and Excel files, and the preview feature, in a later release.
The plug-in should install the capability to read and write OpenDocument ODT files from the MS Word “File?? menu. You can implement this in two ways. The best way is to add “OpenDocument?? as one of the file types in the file open and file save dialog boxes. However, it is acceptable for this first project to add two new items to the File menu, “Open OpenDocument?? and “SaveOpenDocument??.
The plug-in should include an executable filter that can convert a .DOC file to OpenDocument, or OpenDocument to .DOC. We will use open source code from Open Office to make this filter. One of the requirements is to extract the required code from Open Office, and build the MINIMUM executable that can convert these files.
The plug-in should be packaged inside an installer that can run automatically when it is downloaded. The installer should be in MSI or EXE format.
The complete package should be tested on Windows XP with Microsoft Word 2003, or some other recent version of Microsoft Office.
Source code and build scripts must be delivered.
The developer must participate in an open development process. Source code should be checked into my Subversion server every day. We will do weekly builds of a test version of the plug-in. We will manage requirements, issues, and discussions with Trac, an online issue management / wiki / SCM system.
